Fire Code & Prevention

Fire Prevention & Fire Codes

The Hillside Fire Prevention Division oversees the enforcement of fire codes, new construction plan reviews, fire investigations, and public education activities designed to reduce hazard and risks throughout the community.

Our fire prevention division consists of a Captain who oversee the Fire Prevention Division, Fire Prevention Director, and four field inspectors. This team inspects hundreds of buildings and properties each year.

During an on-site inspection, the Fire Prevention Bureau members will evaluate whether conditions pose a fire hazard or a threat to life safety. Our team will educate the owner/manager on ways to mitigate these problems to comply with all fire codes within a reasonable timeframe.

Below is a list of common fire code violations the Fire Prevention Bureau routinely encounters:

  • Smoke alarms not installed or not operating correctly
  • Faulty fire alarm and fire suppression systems
  • Improper electrical wiring, including the overuse of extension cords
  • Fire extinguisher not available or unfunctional for use
  • Improper storage of flammable liquids
  • Combustible material stored too close to heat sources (appliance/water heaters)
  • Faulty emergency lighting and exit signs

For questions about codes, fire prevention and inspections, contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at (708) 547-8684 or by email.
