Mission Statement

The mission of the Hillside Consolidated Dispatch Center is to treat the residents and the first responders with the utmost respect, professionalism, and compassion all while giving exemplary, top-rated service expected from all the stakeholders.

Overview

Hillside’s Emergency Dispatch Center responds to requests for emergency and non-emergency police, fire, and medical services. The Center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and is ran by a team of professionally trained, fully certified telecommunicators.

In 2020, Hillside successfully sought out a consolidation grant from the State of Illinois and used those funds towards the cost of updating the Village’s dispatch center and dispatch equipment. Our modernized public safety dispatch center now dispatches the Police and Fire for the Village of Hillside, Police and Fire for the Village of Westchester, and Fire for the Village of Berkeley.

The dispatch center updates include an updated 9-1-1 answering system that ensures the accuracy of the 911 calls received and a newer IP based radio console with increased features. Additional features include a Zetron fire station alerting system for improved communication between the dispatch center and the fire departments. Overall, the system is equipped with redundancy (handling calls more expeditiously), ability to connect to a statewide 911 network (ESInet), and more capable of handling any next generation 9-1-1 challenges.

When to Call 911 

Call 911 immediately if:

  • You are witnessing an in-progress crime.
  • You fear for your life or safety, or for that of another.
  • You believe there is an imminent threat to property.

Tips for Calling 911

  • Stay calm. Speak clearly. Emergency units (police, fire or ambulance) rely on the information you give to get to you as soon as possible and to be able to help you.
  • Give your address and phone number. Many 911 systems automatically display your address, but most cellular phones do not. Your address is vital information. We cannot help you if we don’t know where you are.
  • Quickly and briefly describe your problem. As soon as we know what you need, we will know who (police car, ambulance, fire truck) to send to help you. Get to the point as soon as possible.
  • Describe yourself. Tell the 911 Call Taker where you are and what you look like, including what you are wearing. We want officers who are arriving on the scene to know who they can contact and that you are not the suspect.
  • Listen to the 911 Call Taker. Answer their questions and follow any instructions. Remain on the line until the 911 Call Taker says it is okay for you to hang up.

Remember: Answering questions does NOT delay the dispatch of assistance. A dispatcher is sending help your way while the Call Taker takes additional information from you. The more pertinent information you give us, the safer everyone will be.

What Happens When You Call 911?

  • Our 911 Call Taker enters the information you give into a computer.
  • Our dispatchers assign a priority to the call based on the type of call (burglary, shooting, etc.). Additional information you give can affect the priority.
  • Our Dispatcher radios the information to patrol units responding to the call.
  • Additional information from you is sent to officers either by radio or computer. Details are vital, so remain calm and speak clearly.
