The fire service has been involved in rescue operations since its inception. The Hillside Fire Department decided to tackle these specific areas in the late 1980’s. A number of department personnel attended the “High Angle” rescue class put on in Broadview. Later a team of members from Division 7 organized to become the “Division 7 High Angle Rescue Team”. This team originally trained in rappelling, mechanical advantages systems, patient packing techniques, and other above grade related skills.

Shortly after that the MABAS Division 20 “Technical Rescue Team” was developed with the conjunction of sixteen (16) other towns in Division 20.

Throughout the year members of the Hillside Fire Department attend monthly training drills and scenarios which require the use of all their knowledge and skills in order to stay ready for any situation that may arise. This dedication to training is essential for the team to complete in the ever-changing environment of today’s fire service.

The Technical Rescue Team will be trained in different disciplines, some of which include above and below grade rescues, confined space rescue, trench rescue, and structural collapse rescue. The Hillside Fire Department and the Technical Rescue Team continues to strive to provide the best possible service to the citizens and visitors of Hillside.
