Background

Paramedics Inside ambulanceThe Hillside Fire Department provides Emergency Medical Services to residents and visitors of the Village 24 hours a day. The Department operates two fully equipped Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic ambulances which is staffed by 2 full time paramedics. In addition, all fire suppression apparatus carries full ALS gear to provide advanced patient care when both ambulances are tied up. All of the firefighters are trained as certified Illinois Department of Public Health licensed Paramedics. Because the Hillside Fire Department provides emergency service, we can only transport to the closest appropriate hospital. Currently we transport to Loyola, LaGrange, Elmhurst or Hines Hospitals.

Administration

Ambulance in parking lotThe Fire Department EMS Coordinator is responsible for all medical aspects of pre-hospital patient care. The department EMS Coordinator serves as a liaison between the hospital, and the Paramedics. They must ensure that the service given to our residents meets State and Federal standards. The coordinator keeps records, conducts program evaluations, and generates activity reports as required. They work close with the resource hospital to establish and monitor compliance with field performance guidelines, and monitors training standards.

Personnel

Paramedics are the vital link between patients too ill or injured to wait for treatment at the hospital emergency room. We are called upon to identify and treat illnesses and injuries using skills that have profound effect on the patients we serve. Responding to a wide range of emergency medical calls, paramedics are often faced with heart attacks, burns, car accidents, and industrial and household injuries. We provide emergency services ranging from life saving cardiac care, delivering babies, treating an elderly patient with difficulty breathing, to a wide variety of other injuries and illnesses.

Training

Training for our paramedics is an important part of the EMS service that we provide. Currently, the Firefighter/Paramedics are hired after completing a rigorous paramedic class. All of the Paramedics attend monthly EMS in-station or online training taught by certified instructors from Loyola and Region 8 Hospitals. Each Paramedic is then required to pass re-certification exams on all areas of emergency medical care every four years. In addition, each Paramedic is required to preform additional hands-on training to keep their skills sharp.

Patient Assist

The fire department offers assistance to residents that need help getting from their residence into their vehicles or back into their residence. This service is free of charge, but is subject to availability due to training activities or emergency calls. Please call 911 or the fire station at 708-547-8684 for availability
