About the Mayor

Joseph T. Tamburino is the Mayor of Hillside. He was first elected mayor of the Village of Hillside 1981 and has continued to serve in that position to this day.

Mayor Tamburino began his public career in 1977 when he was elected Hillside village trustee and served as the chairperson of the Finance Committee and the Community Affairs Committee.

During his tenure, Mayor Tamburino has helped to create many programs for the benefit of Hillside residents including the Taxi Cab Program for seniors, The Youth Athletic Parade, Project U.F.O. (spring clean-up program), summer Concert Series, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast, holiday programs and other special events.

Joe, along with the late former village clerk, Patrick O’Sullivan, formed the Chamber of Commerce and together they played an important role in the building and formation of the Veterans Memorial. Continuing his efforts to honor our veterans, he started the Annual Memorial Day Service, Veterans Reception and Veterans Day Parade. Joe was also extremely instrumental in the building and completion of a home honoring a disabled veteran and his family.

Mayor Tamburino also formed new committees and commissions such as, Economic Development, Environmental, Intergovernmental Relations Committees and the Human Relations Commission later named the Community Relations Commission.

Joe is active in the development of a beautification plan and has taken a proactive role in the growth of the business community. His efforts have resulted in a 32-acre shopping development known as the Hillside Town Center located at Mannheim Road and the Eisenhower Expressway which is anchored by a Super Target and many outstanding stores and restaurants.

Mayor Tamburino is a life member of the VFW and the American Legion. Joe also is a member of the Knights of Columbus Assumption Council, #3671 and served on the St. Domitilla Parish Council. He also served on the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Board of Governors for 20 years. Joe is currently the secretary of the Proviso Municipal League and also served as their past president. He is also a former president of the West Central Municipal Conference.

Mayor Tamburino is a lifelong resident of the Hillside-Berkeley area and has three grown children and five grandchildren.
