New Refuse, Recycling and Yard Waste Program

The Mayor and Board of Trustees are excited to announce that the Village of Hillside will soon begin a new Refuse, Recycling and Yard Waste Contract with a new waste hauling contractor, Waste Management. While this new contract for single family residential homes is largely a continuation of the existing program, the Village was able to secure additional features that will enhance the existing program and provide you, the resident, with added benefits at no additional cost.

Highlights of Enhanced Three (3) Cart Program:

Refuse - Each resident will receive a new 96 gallon Refuse Wheeled Cart (Dark Gray) that will replace your existing container. This cart is the same size that all residents currently utilize. Additional home owner garbage cans (32 gallons or less) can be utilized at any time under the new program if the quantity of your refuse exceeds the capacity of the cart supplied. Seniors and medically necessary individuals meeting the requirements outlined in the attached survey will be afforded a choice of a smaller 64 gallon Refuse Wheeled Cart.

Recycling - Each resident will receive a new 64 gallon Recycling Wheeled Cart (Municipal Blue) that will replace your existing 35 gallon recycling cart. In review of the current program, the Village found the existing carts to be undersized. This new program will accommodate and encourage residents to continue their participation with the recycling program. Seniors and medically necessary individuals meeting the requirements outlined in the attached survey will be afforded a choice of a smaller 35 gallon Recycling Wheeled Cart.

Yard Waste - The Village is extremely excited to announce the end of required use of yard waste stickers. The new program will allow residents to dispose of yard waste materials at no charge and without a yard waste sticker. Residents who desire to participate in this program will also receive a new 96 gallon Yard Waste Wheeled Cart (Teal Green) free of charge. This container may be used for any yard waste materials such as grass clippings, leaves, plant materials and by-products, weeds, small branches, corn stalks, vines and the like.

Yard Waste Sticker Buy Back - The Village will offer a yard waste sticker buy back program for residents that have excess stickers after June 1, 2008. Residents will be reimbursed the face value of each yard waste sticker that is return to the Hillside Village Hall Administrative front desk from June 1, 2008 through August 29, 2008.

Leaf Removal - The Village will be starting a new and enhanced Fall Leaf Program. Although the Village will no longer be providing curb side leaf removal during the fall, the new program will still afford residents the opportunity to dispose of leaves at no cost. Under the new program, the new refuse contractor (Waste Management) will be responsible for the removal and disposal of this material. Residents will be allowed to dispose of leaves in the 95 gallon Wheeled Yard Waste Cart. Additional home owner garbage cans clearly marked “Yard Waste” (32 gallons or less) or biodegradable Kraft paper bags can be utilized if the quantity of your yard waste exceeds the capacity of the cart supplied.

Large Bulk Items - Residents can dispose of one large item per week. Large items include couches, small tables, televisions and the like.

Appliances - Appliances will be removed by the waste hauling contractor in a separate truck on your regularly scheduled service day at no charge. Appliances include refrigerators, washer & dryers, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, furnaces, dishwasher, water heaters and dehumidifiers.

Service Days - At the present time, there will be no change in your scheduled day. All items as described above shall be removed according to the current disposal schedule. Residents will be reminded to have their carts and items out for removal the night prior to their scheduled service day.

Existing Carts - The current wheeled carts are the property of the exiting waste hauler (Arc/Hillside Disposal) and will be returned to them. The Village will be working with Waste Management and Arc/Hillside Disposal to transition the existing wheeled carts to the new Village owned wheeled carts. The Village will be providing more information on this matter in the near future.
