We would like to relay some information about a problem that surfaced during a recent 911 call for emergency service. In one of our churches during services, a person began to experience what appeared to be a heart attack. A church official used a cell phone and dialed 911 for help. What we have learned form this is that a cell phone is the least effective way to place a 911 call and get immediate help.
Cell phone technology does not allow the call to go directly to our Village Dispatch Center, nor will it pinpoint the address or the town the call is placed from. You will be connected to a third party location, which will require the caller to give more information before they can forward the call to the Village. This can waste precious time.
The lesson learned is that it is best to use a regular landline phone to place 911 calls. Do not use a cell phone for emergency use if a regular telephone line is available. Using a landline phone immediately displays the address of that phone calling 911. This provides the most effective response time.
