This year we are proud to have, Harry F. Sawyer as our Grand Marshal. He is a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran and now serves as the Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA). He joined the IDVA in 1982 as a Veteran Service Officer and has worked for over 35 years helping Veterans and surviving family members to obtain benefits earned through military service. In his position as Field Services Manager, he oversees the selection, training, certification, daily operations and outreach events of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs offices state-wide. Harry grew up in Hillside and attended Hillside School and Proviso West High School. His late mother, Eva was a member of our EMA for many years. As a young man, Sawyer enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Agerholm (DD 826), including a tour of duty off the coast of Vietnam. Completing his enlistment in 1970, he received an honorable discharge and returned to llinois. In 1979 he began assisting his fellow Veterans as a Service Officer with the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his present position as Assistant Director, his mission is to empower Veterans and their families to thrive by assisting them in navigating the system of federal, state and local resources to get benefits such as providing long-term health care for eligible Veterans in the four Illinois Veterans’ Homes and by partnering with other agencies and non-profit organizations to help Veterans address education, mental health, housing, employment and other challenges. Harry is a member of the American Legion and The Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and his lovely wife, Diane are involved in many community organizations. Thank you Harry for everything you have done for our country and our veterans.
